(Image credit: Other World Computing, Inc. Apple even makes a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, enabling even older technology to work with this hardware. On the front is the Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) connection intended to connect the computer for both data transfers and charging (up to 60W), and a single USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port with high power charging.Īt the rear are three more Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports, enabling the Hub to support multiple monitors through cable adapters to cascade down to Thunderbolt 3 or 4 devices. However, as we dug into the Hub's specifications, we realised a good reason why it needs to be this big that we’ll discuss later.

While we accept that only the small part of this package will probably be visible on the desk, the disparity between them is odd. But conversely, the 5.5A PSU that powers it is much larger than the Hub, being over 15cm long.

Out of the box, we were immediately struck by how small this device is, being just 11.8 cm wide and 7.3 cm deep. We should point out that while OWC is a traditional supporter of Apple hardware, at this moment, Thunderbolt 4 is only available on PC’s made by other brands. So happy that 14.That’s precisely the niche that the OWC Thunderbolt Hub hopes to occupy, as it provides a means to expand the port potential of any machine with Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB-C 4.0 technology.

It means my Mac provides me with 2 screens and access to all peripherals while the windows laptop can access the main dell monitor, keyboard and mouse and webcam and they all also share the B&O speaker connected via the monitor so I think just about all my Mac mini and work computer setup issues are now done. Also getting a UGreen KVM to allow fast switching between the 2 computers, utilising my Logitech C922 webcam and with the work computer connected via DP, I can easily switch between the 2 computers by the shortcut key on the Dell monitor.

My Mac mini life is now almost complete getting the Logitech MX Keys keyboard + MX 3 Master mouse in a few days which negates any bluetooth issue with the unified dongle and allows just 1 keyboard for my work windows Laptop and my Mac. Heck yeah, just entered the public beta program and downloaded Big Sur 14.2 and YES the old (2006) 23" Apple Cinema HAD monitor with DVI input, now works beautifully on Apple’s HDMI to DVI adapter, which means I can now use the 2 USB-C ports for my external SSD and for my USB-C 4K Dell Monitor which in turn provides me with a reasonable number of reasonable speed downstream USB-A and USB-C additional ports. I could use some help/reference with specific links to hubs/docks that are actually for sale here and now that has minimum 2 USB-C or T3 DATA connections apart from the cable connecting the hub/dock to the Mini. Well, it's not entirely true as I have seen the massive and massively expensive which I find rather chunky and clunky!

So I can't really really see how to solve the challenge of getting a true 3rd USB-C/T3 port on my Mac mini. To boot, the one available USB-C port on the hub is typically 5 Gbps (400 MB/s) or max 10 Gbps while the actual T3 port on the computer provides a 40 Gbps connection. The only benefit such hub gives me is the other ports it contains, like maybe 2-3 USB-A ports and an SD-card reader but that ain’t what I’m looking for. The third USB-C then only makes up for the USB-C port occupied by plugging in the hub so net there are ZERO additional USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports provided by such a hub. Most everything I find that looks to have 2 or even 3 USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, AS FAR AS I UNDERSTAND, are intended for powered USB-C input from a charging brick (no data) to power the whole hub, then a USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 connection to the computer for data transfer between hub and computer as well as charging the computer if it is a laptop! So those 2 ports are of no use to me. I am missing 1 more port to feed the upstream hub on my Dell U2720q monitor.

The other port is occupied by my Sandisk Extreme Pro E61 SDD. I have an old Cinema HD Display that right now only works with a USB-C to DVI adapter, that kills 1 port.
